What is ketamine therapy?

Ketamine is the most important recent breakthrough for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and chronic pain. Antidepressants and other medications may not provide complete relief for many people.

Fortunately, up to 80% of people who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts get significant improvement in their symptoms after ketamine therapy.

About Infuse Ketamine

Dr. Dalia Ibrahim has been helping patients find hope and healing with ketamine since 2019.

She has extensive experience and has treated a range of complex cases successfully. At Infuse, evaluations and treatments are administered by a physician and custom tailored for the individual needs of our patients. We take pride in getting to know our patients and helping them on their path to wellness.

Common Misconceptions About Ketamine

Many think of ketamine as a street drug. While it has had a history as a drug of abuse, ketamine does not have addictive qualities and ketamine is overwhelmingly safe when administered properly and under the supervision of a physician.

How Does Ketamine Work?

While the exact mechanism is not completely understood, ketamine has been shown to stimulate repair cascades in the brain, repairing neural connections known as synapses that have been damaged by chronic stress. Ketamine improves communication between synapses, which alleviates the symptoms of depression. While antidepressants typically take weeks to build up in your body, ketamine works rapidly and effects are long-lasting.

The Evidence for Ketamine

In a study on treatment-resistant depression published in Biological Psychiatry, participants took six IV infusions of ketamine.

25% of them were symptom-free at 90 days, and 75% of patients had symptom-free days between 11-27 days.

In another study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, 12 out of 14 subjects were treated with all six IV infusions, finishing with a 92% response rate and 66% went into remission.

Finally, in a double-blind study from JAMA Psychiatry, a single dose of ketamine was compared to midazolam, a sedative. Authors noted a significant immediate reduction in symptoms of PTSD.

Side Effects of Ketamine

Ketamine is noted for having side effects that are few and far between, and quite mild when they do occur. Some of the minor side effects that have been reported following ketamine use include headaches and drowsiness.

There are rare incidences of people developing cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder. However, this condition is not life-threatening and is very manageable.
